The Director of the IMF’s Strategy, Policy, and Review (SPR) Department, Ms. Ceyla Pazarbasioglu, visited the JVI on March 4 to meet with staff, before heading to a conference organized by the Austrian National Bank on Bretton Woods @ 80 and Austria's IMF Membership @ 75, where she spoke about the changing role of the Bretton Woods institutions over the past 80 years, present-day challenges to multilateralism, and Special Drawing Rights (the IMF’s global reserve asset).
Ms. Pazarbasioglu, who had just attended a G-20 meeting in Brazil, provided an overview of short- and medium-term challenges facing the world economy and what the IMF does, and recommends to its membership, to respond to these challenges. Training delivered at the JVI contributes to this response by building capacity in critical areas such as fiscal and debt management, the economics of climate change, and the economic and financial impact of digitalization, just to name a few. The group exchanged views on the risks of geoeconomic fragmentation and policy responses, among other topics.
