Maria Arakelyan joined the Joint Vienna Institute in October 2016. She had previously worked as an economist in the Global Risk Analysis team at Deutsche Bank Research for over 5 years. Her work there focused on providing a medium- to long-term view on the sovereign risk of the Commonwealth of Independent States countries. She has also done a number of internships in different ministries in Armenia, as well as at the IMF in Washington, DC. Maria received a Diploma in International Economics from the Armenian State University of Economics, and an MSc in Money and Finance from the Goethe University in Frankfurt, where she is currently finalizing her PhD in Economics. Her research interests primarily lie in the areas of macro-financial linkages and empirical macroeconometrics. She is a native Armenian speaker, is fluent in English and Russian, and has intermediate level knowledge of German.
